Le livre Epsilon de la Metaphysique d'Aristote est aussi bref que fondamental pour l'intelligence du projet aristotelicien et l'histoire de la metaphysique. Ses quatre chapitres examinent des questions apparemment heterogenes: la difference entre la philosophie premiere, philosophie theologique qui porte aussi sur l'etre en tant qu'etre, et les deux autres sciences theoretiques, la physique et les mathematiques; l'etre par accident, en lui-meme et en tant que cause; l'etre comme vrai et le non-etre comme faux. Aristote circonscrit en fait ainsi l'objet de la science de l'etre en tant qu'etre. On comprend donc que le livre Epsilon soit l'un de ceux dont l'interpretation reste la plus discutee. Ses difficultes stylistiques et doctrinales ont conduit plus d'un interprete a douter de son authenticite. De l'antiquite a l'epoque contemporaine, son premier chapitre a connu une fortune seulement comparable a celle du livre Lambda. C'est l'unite de la Metaphysique et l'objet de cette science qui s'y jouent. Ce livre est presente ici dans une traduction nouvelle, accompagnee d'une introduction et d'un commentaire continu. L'introduction expose les positions philosophiques caracteristiques du livre Epsilon et ses articulations chapitre par chapitre; elle etudie la place d'Epsilon dans la Metaphysique et ses rapports avec les livres Kappa et Theta; elle prend en compte sa reception medievale, moderne et contemporaine. Le commentaire restitue les lignes de force de l'argumentation aristotelicienne, analyse en detail ses difficultes a la lumiere des commentaires anciens et modernes, propose des solutions, oriente a chaque pas dans la bibliographie, donne les moyens de revenir a meme le texte aux sources de la metaphysique.
