La disfatta di Canne raccontata da un fromboliere siracusano amico di Fabio Massimo. La vicenda prende le mosse dall'ultima impresa militare del condottiero romano, la riconquista di Taranto tolta ad Annibale. Emergono molti dei protagonisti di quella terribile fase della seconda guerra punica a ragione considerata una vera e propria guerra mondiale della antichità in quanto coinvolse i principali popoli del Mediterraneo senza eccezioni. Si raccontano gli episodi salienti che dopo la sconfitta romana al Trasimeno spingono Fabio Massimo ad accettare la dittatura per contrastare Annibale. Fabio delude i Romani perchè non accetta lo scontro in campo aperto. Si apre un conflitto politico all'interno di Roma fra coloro che vogliono la resa dei conti immediata, guidati da parte del patriziato e dall'ambizioso Varrone e coloro che come Fabio Massimo non sottovalutano le doti strategiche del condottiero punico. La scena si affolla di personaggi dall'una e dall'altra parte mentre il scontro militare auspicato da Annibale e rifiutato da Fabio Massimo troverà i suoi interpreti romani nei consoli Terenzio Varrone e Paolo Emilio. Una poderosa armata viene messa in capo per dare la caccia ad Annibale. Fabio Massimo invita alla prudenza e non si fida della schiacciante prevalenza dei numeri a favore dei Romani. Ma nella piana di Canne gli errori dei Romani e il genio militare di Annibale sfocerà in una carneficina. Il campo di battaglia racconterà episodi di eroismo e di morte. Il racconto segue i comportamenti dei protagonisti, compreso colui di cui Annibale dovrà preoccuparsi in seguito: il giovane Publio Cornelio Scipione. Roma sembra perduta ma non lo è per Fabio Massimo che riprende per mano i propri concittadini che nella disperazione avevano ripreso anche antichi rituali come i sacrifici umani. Fabio Massimo li convince ad imparare dagli errori, a mutare le tattiche che diverranno imprevedibili quanto quelle dei Cartaginesi, a riallacciare alleanze, a impedire ad Annibale di lucrare sulla grande vittoria. Nel frattempo emerge la figura del giovane Scipione che a differenza di Fabio Massimo vede nella guerra l'occasione che va oltre la conferma di Roma come potenza regionale nella penisola, ma come potenza egemone nel Mediterraneo. E la sua spedizione in Africa poco dopo tempo la morte di Fabio Massimo con la vittoria a Zama sul grande rivale nella battaglia perfetta sancirà questo nuovo destino per Roma. L'attenzione non va tanto agli eventi, pur descritti nel rispetto delle fonti antiche, quanto alle emozioni, speranze, incertezze, dolori, atti di coraggio delle figure che hanno giganteggiato nella seconda guerra punica.
