Urszula und Hans-Joachim (Jochen) Schubert (Jahrgang 1932 und 1929) erleben während ihrer Kindheit alle Facetten des Krieges wie Hunger, Kälte, Heimatlosigkeit und immer wieder die Konfrontation mit dem Tod. Urszulas Vater ist Pole, die Mutter Deutsche. Ihre Familie lebt bis zu Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges in Graudenz. 1939 wird die Stadt dem Deutschen Reich einverleibt. Sowohl Deutschland als auch die Sowjetunion streben die Beseitigung Polens an. Die Elite des Nachbarn wird gejagt, verschleppt, ermordet. Slawen gelten bei den Nationalsozialisten als Untermenschen. Dennoch werden arisch aussehende polnische Kinder nach Deutschland entführt und dort zur Adoption freigegeben. Mit Einsetzen der Treibjagd auf die Polen 1939 flieht Urszulas Familie zunächst nach Wojniti und später nach Krakau. Um die Kinder zu schützen, trennen sich die Eltern, wie sie hoffen, nur für kurze Zeit. Die Mutter zieht mit Urszula und ihrem Bruder Werner, die nun schnellstens deutsche Kinder werden müssen, ins Elternhaus nach Danzig. Im großmütterlichen Nazihaushalt und in der Schule werden die Kinder wegen ihrer Herkunft und den unvermeidlichen Schwierigkeiten mit der deutschen Sprache schikaniert. Den geliebten Vater werden sie nie wieder sehen. Urszula und Werner erleben Luftangriffe, Verschüttung, die nahezu vollständige Zerstörung Danzigs und schließlich ihre eigene Vertreibung. Als Flüchtlinge aus dem Osten werden sie nach Ankunft in Deutschland erneut als Menschen zweiter Klasse behandelt. Jochen ergeht es nicht besser. Er wächst gemeinsam mit seiner Schwester Gerdi bei der Mutter in ärmsten Verhältnissen in Erfurt auf. Um ihn kümmert sich kaum jemand, selbst als er schwer erkrankt. Jochen trifft die Kriegspropaganda mit voller Wucht. Er wird schließlich Kindersoldat. Geschildert werden zwei Einzelschicksale, stellvertretend für eine ganze Generation, die Kriegskinder.
About the Author: Helga Matyasik wurde 1960 in Halle/Saale geboren. Sie arbeitet als promovierte Gefäßchirurgin in Erfurt. Unter ihrem richtigen Namen, Helga Schubert, erschienen bisher die Bücher "Die Perversion Leben", "Heimat Schelfeis" und "Lebenselixier Berg", unter ihrem Pseudonym Helga Matyasik "Dezembers Geburtstag" und "Alptraum Kriegskindheit".
