About the Book

50 Years at the Bar and Still Sober is the story of the meteoric rise of one man from the expansive farmlands of Kennett, Missouri and how a chance court hearing during his youth would catapult him into post-law school opportunities simply unheard of in the 60s. Follow George C. Howard, Jr. from his rural beginnings to bombshell cases he's tried, won and bested doctors, law enforcement and U.S. governmental powers-that-be. Meet the consistently unbeatable Attorney Howard.
About the Author: For over 50 years, Attorney George C. Howard, Jr. has practiced law. From his humble beginnings in Kennett, MO, to receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lincoln University in 1956, and a Juris Doctor degree from John Marshall Law School in 1961, he proceeded to establish himself as one of the most influential attorneys in Illinois. Attorney Howard was selected as one of the ten best criminal lawyers in Illinois by Chicago Lawyer magazine and one of the top five best criminal lawyers in Chicago by The Chicago Tribune magazine. Attorney Howard defended Abraham Bolden, the first African-American Secret Service agent assigned to the White House - personally hand-picked by John F. Kennedy - who was also the first Secret Service agent to be indicted and tried in the U.S. Other infamous cases influenced by Attorney Howard's legal prowess included the St. Dorothy's Church Robbery, which caused the Illinois Bail Bond law to be changed in 1967; and there's the 1973 Silas Jayne murder case, during which Attorney Howard served alongside F. Lee Bailey (O.J. Simpson's former attorney) and served as co-counsel with Bailey in several other cases in subsequent years. Attorney Howard has defended people in more than 30 states, which included Delbert Tibbs who was wrongfully accused and convicted of murder and rape in 1974 and was sentenced to death. Mr. Howard was instrumental in proving Tibbs' innocence and freeing him to become an anti-death penalty activist. Tibbs was the inspiration for an anti-death penalty song by musician Pete Seeger and one of six stories dramatized in the acclaimed play and film, The Exonerated. As an accomplished and highly recognized attorney, George C. Howard Jr. served on the Northwestern University Law School's committee for Continuing Legal Education for ten years. He also lectured in all of the law schools in the Chicago area and served as an instructor for the National College of Criminal Defense. Attorney Howard's legal work spans over five decades and has resulted in numerous awards and certificates from many esteemed law schools, universities and public schools across the U.S. His work has been noted in several books, including F. Lee Bailey's For the Defense, John Carroll's Let's Make a Deal, Abraham Bolden's The Echo from Dealey Plaza, as well as Your Witness by Steven F. Molo and James R. Figliulo. Attorney Howard is enjoying a quiet life in Chicago with his wife of 61 years, Catherine.
