Public Relations könnten nicht ohne Rhetorik bestehen. Der Ruf nach professionell durchgeführten Public Relations wird trotzdem immer lauter. Um langfristige Überzeugungsarbeit zu leisten und zukunftsorientierte Journalistenkontakte aufzubauen, reicht nicht die einfache Versendung von Pressetexten, die oftmals wenig professionell formuliert sind. Selbst Agenturen, die sich auf Pressearbeit spezialisiert haben, werden diesen Qualitäts-Standards oftmals nicht gerecht. Besonders kleinere und mittelständische Unternehmen müssen die Bedeutung der Public Relations für die Zukunft erkennen und mehr Geld in ihre Presseabteilungen investieren. Es zeigt sich, dass die PR das Marketinginstrument der Zukunft ist. Die persönliche Ansprache der Kunden sollte jedoch der Weg von morgen sein. Hierzu können Konzepte, wie das der Integrierten Kommunikation, Möglichkeiten sein, aber auch viele andere Art und Weisen der PR, die hier nicht angesprochen wurden. Die Bereitschaft oder der Mut der Unternehmen, solche Wege zu gehen, ist jedoch immer noch zu gering. Bereichsegoismen sowie historisch gewachsene Strukturen verhindern eine wirkliche Orientierung des Kommunikationsbedarfs an werthaltigen Zielgruppen. Die Kommunikationsbereiche der Unternehmen agieren weiterhin isoliert voneinander. Eine ganzheitliche Steuerung der Kommunikation, über die auch bereits bestehende Potenziale erschlossen werden können, findet nur bei den wenigsten Unternehmen statt.
