Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Medien / Kommunikation - Film und Fernsehen, Note: 1,5, Universität Hamburg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die traditionellen Theorien der Medienkultur, beispielsweise vertreten durch Theodor W. Adorno und Günther Anders, zeichnen im Allgemeinen ein sehr negatives und pessimistisches Bild vom Fernsehzuschauer. So gehen sowohl Adorno als auch Anders davon aus, dass der Mensch im Zeitalter der Kulturindustrie völlig unfrei ist, in dem Sinne, dass er die Fähigkeit und den Willen selbst kritisch zu denken, sich die Welt eigenständig anzueignen, sich ein "Bild zu machen" und sich als Individuum zu verstehen, aufgegeben hat. John Fiske beschreibt dieses Phänomen in seinem 1989 veröffentlichten Aufsatz "Augenblicke des Fernsehens" wie folgt: "Eine Gruppe von Menschen vor einem Fernsehgerät, mit gebeugtem Rücken, schwächlich auf einer Couch sitzend, Drinks oder Snacks in der Hand, die Augen starr auf den Bildschirm gerichtet (...) das ist die gängige Vorstellung vom Fernsehen und seinem Publikum." Das Fernsehen ist hierbei sicherlich der Inbegriff dessen, was Adorno unter "Kulturindustrie" versteht. Es ist primär ein Medium der Unterhaltung und sogar dort, wo es vorgibt, rein informative Inhalte vermitteln zu wollen (z.B in den Nachrichten), steht tatsächlich die Unterhaltung im Mittelpunkt. Wie auch der Kritiker Neil Postman in seiner Abhandlung über "Das Zeitalter des Showbusiness" von 1985 nachweist, ist es keineswegs die vorrangige Aufgabe des Fernsehens, den Zuschauer aufzuklären oder ihn gar zum eigenen Nachdenken anzuregen: "(...) "gutes Fernsehen" [hat] nichts mit dem zu tun, was man im Hinblick auf Erörterung, Urteilsbildung oder andere Formen sprachlicher Kommunikation als "gut" bezeichnen würde, sehr viel dagegen mit der Wirkungsweise von Bildern." Auf diese Weise produziert die Kulturindustrie unkritisches Wissen, macht "Reklame für die Welt" und verfestigt somit die Massenmentalität. Aus diesem Grund hält Anders
