Questo libro fornisce una descrizione della meccanica classica, partendo dalle formulazioni classiche del moto delle particelle puntiformi. Fu solo quando la meccanica classica era già ben consolidata che ci si rese conto che esistono due domini di movimento in molti sistemi: non caotico; e caotico. Questa è un'esposizione moderna della meccanica classica, che include quindi la teoria del caos e include anche collegamenti con sviluppi teorici successivi. L'esposizione consiste, in tutto, nella presentazione di problemi interessanti, molti dei quali risolti, gli altri lasciati al lettore. I problemi sono tratti dai corsi di meccanica classica e matematica seguiti al Caltech, a Oxford e all'Università del Wisconsin.
