Il grande Leonardo, morto ad Amboise il 2 maggio 1519, fu certamente uno psicotico. Egli ebbe dei forti traumi in gioventù. La sua esistenza fu una costante lotta per trascendere il proprio passato, nel quale appare la sua misteriosa madre. Egli fu un narcisista dalla personalità divisa, che si poneva degli obiettivi irraggiungibili che alimentarono la sua insoddisfazione. PremessaLa storia non può essere interpretata esclusivamente analizzando fatti e documenti. Gli storici devono seguire indizi, ricordi e impressioni, poiché talora le prove non esistono, oppure, se esistono, sono distorte e confuse. Quando si studiano la vita e le opere di Leonardo Da Vinci questo problema si fa particolarmente acuto, giacché, nonostante tutti gli sforzi compiuti da grandi storici, la sua vita resta un enigma. Forse, nuovi documenti emergeranno in futuro, mettendo alla prova ipotesi oggi ritenute credibili e sicure, ma allo stato attuale delle cose si può affermare che conosciamo più dettagli biografici di tanti artisti rinascimentali, tutto sommato minori, che non del grande Leonardo.Sappiamo che Leonardo Da Vinci nacque il 15 aprile 1452, a Vinci, in Toscana,1 da genitori non legati da vincolo matrimoniale: la sua fu dunque una nascita accidentale, il risultato d'un furtivo amplesso fra ser Piero d'Antonio Da Vinci (1426- 1504) - un rampante notaio della Repubblica Fiorentina - e una misteriosa Caterina (1427/34-1494). Questa ragazza non poteva sperare di diventare la sua legittima sposa, poiché ser Piero fu un professionista ambizioso, con forti aspirazioni al successo materiale e all'acquisizione di clienti nel competitivo mondo finanziario e mercantile fiorentino. Uno dei requisiti indispensabili per salire la scala sociale era lo sposarsi bene e, per rimediare al faux pas compiuto con una ragazza priva di mezzi, ser Piero agì da sensale nei confronti della sua vittima, dopo il parto, offrendola in sposa a uno dei suoi aiutanti: Antonio di Piero del Vaccha d'Andrea Buti, soprannominato l'Accattabriga: un nomignolo che, ieri come oggi, indica una persona facilmente irritabile e prepotente.Caterina continuò a vivere a Vinci, dopo che vi era stata portata da Firenze per darvi alla luce Leonardo, badando al suo nuovo marito e ai cinque figli che successivamente la coppia mise al mondo. Non si ha ragione di dubitare che Leonardo fu in quotidiano contatto con sua madre, benché alcuni biografi, senza averne le prove, accettano l'immagine romantica di un bambino strappato al seno materno subito dopo lo svezzamento e affidato da ser Piero alla sua legittima moglie, Albiera, impalmata a Firenze. Nulla sappiamo della gioventù di Leonardo: dove la trascorse e con chi, e nulla conosciamo della sua educazione e dei suoi maestri, se mai ne ebbe, poiché egli si definì un omo sanza lettere.
