About the Book

Many small farms across America went belly-up in the years after the Great Depression and World War II. My grandparent's farm was one of the many that failed, but in this case for a different reason. It was a long, slow death that was all the more tragic because it could have been avoided. The cause was two-fold: first, the fact that my grandparents had four daughters, but no sons to carry on the work of running a farm. The second cause was grounded in human nature; in the character of the eldest daughter who could not succeed and would not admit to failure. She stubbornly struggled against all odds and failed to quit when she was ahead. In that sense, she shares some traits of human nature common to all of us. This family memoir is not all tragedy; in the bits and pieces of the family's memories are many bright spots and uplifting tales. It is a family history of both sad and happy times; fondly remembered by a grandson, thankful for the memories.
About the Author: Milton Franson spent many summers helping out on his grandparents' farm, growing up in the 1940s and 50s. It was an era still recovering from The Great Depression and changing from plow horses to tractors. The author straddled this era between horse and wagon and the chrome trimmed cars of the fifties. Life then, required long hours of hard work and our culture learned thrift and sacrifice from the Depression years. But there were roses among the thorns, and these bright days are fondly remembered here. The author is a fan of alternate history and has written two novels; one, a trilogy of historical fiction that imagines a "Lost Viking Colony in North America" founded by Leif Eriksson in 1003. The title is "The Wineland Sagas." The second historical fiction answers one of the Civil War's great "what ifs?" What if gen. Robert E. Lee had won the Battle of Gettysburg? The title is "LEE - Victory at Gettysburg". Both books are available at Amazon.com
