Esdras, Neemias e Ester são os últimos dos livros históricos. Nestes livros, vemos a realeza sendo retirada. A realeza foi tirada da terra e Deus a entregou aos gentios. Até hoje, Israel está sem um rei próprio e ficará sem rei até que o verdadeiro Rei volte para reinar. O Rei que eles rejeitaram um dia reinará supremo. Aprendemos com isso que a falha em dar ao Senhor o lugar que Lhe é de direito em nossas vidas nos roubará das bênçãos espirituais.

Embora esses três livros estejam posicionados na primeira metade do Antigo Testamento, eles realmente representam o final da história judaica no Antigo Testamento. São frequentemente chamados de livros "pós-cativeiro", junto com as profecias de Ageu, Zacarias e Malaquias. Deve-se ter em mente que uma das razões mais importantes para o retorno do remanescente à terra era o cumprimento de Miqueias 5:2 - o nascimento do Senhor Jesus em Belém.
