Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Im Laufe des vergangenen Jahrhunderts lässt sich bei Unternehmen hinsichtlich des praktizierten vertikalen Integrationsgrades ein fundamentaler Paradigmenwechsel feststellen. Für den Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts berichtet der Wirtschaftshistoriker CHANDLER von einer großen Zahl von Unternehmen aus den unterschiedlichsten Branchen, welche einen möglichst hohen vertikalen Integrationsgrad anstreben. Scheinbar diametral hat sich diese Beurteilung der optimalen Leistungstiefe zum Ausgang des 20. Jahrhunderts umgekehrt. Strategische Allianzen, virtuelle Unternehmen, (strategisches) Outsourcing oder die vielbeschworene Konzentration auf die Kernkompetenzen des Unternehmens sind nur einige der Schlagworte, die heute in diesem Zusammenhang propagiert werden. Seit einiger Zeit bestimmt offensichtlich die Desintegration und der Fremdbezug von Leistungserstellungsaktivitäten das unternehmerische Handeln. Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht dieses empirische Phänomen durch verschiedene ökonomische Theorieansätze zu erklären und gibt einen Ausblick auf die mögliche zukünftige Entwicklung.
