Dall'attacco a Pearl Harbor all'ultima disperata difesa di fronte ai massicci bombardamenti alleati e agli attacchi suicidi contro le squadre navali avversarie, il Mitsubishi A6M Reisen (battezzato "Rei-sen", ossia caccia zero con riferimento all'anno 2600 del calendario giapponese, il 1940 d.C) prese parte a quasi tutte le principali azioni dell'aviazione navale nipponica. La sua favolosa manovrabilità e la sua eccezionale autonomia furono leggendarie, e fecero dello Zero il simbolo della potenza aerea del Sol Levante, tanto da renderlo famoso quanto lo Spitfire o il Bf. 109. Lo Zero si conquistò la fama con una serie di brillanti vittorie contro tutti i velivoli alleati nei primi mesi della guerra nel Pacifico, e poiché la marina giapponese trovò difficoltà a mettere in servizio un altro caccia moderno capace di competere con i nuovi aerei alleati che comparvero nel Pacifico verso la fine del 1942, il Mitsubishi A6M dovette sostenere in gran parte il peso delle operazioni fino al termine del conflitto.Per il Giappone lo Zero fu, in realtà, assai più di un aeroplano, ma il simbolo stesso della potenza aerea dell'Impero; er gli Alleati fu assai più di un implacabile avversario, ma un incubo e al tempo stesso un mito. A lungo gli furono attribuite delle virtù in gran parte immaginarie, poiché le sue uniche e incontestabili doti erano un'eccezionale manovrabilità e un altrettanto eccezionale autonomia. Il Mitsubishi A6M è uno di quegli aerei che non potrebbe suscitare opinioni più contrastanti, ora ignorato, ora temuto, infine ridicolizzato, e poi ancora ripreso in considerazione, mitizzato, analizzato criticamente, sopravvalutato, sottovalutato, e così via senza soluzione di continuità. Quando iniziarono le ostilità con lo scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale, lo Zero veniva ritenuto il miglior caccia basato su portaerei del mondo, perché associava una eccellente manovrabilità a un'autonomia molto estesa. Nei primi combattimenti aerei, lo Zero si guadagnò una leggendaria reputazione come "cacciatore", ma nel 1942 le nuove tattiche di combattimento consentirono ai piloti Alleati di ingaggiare duelli in termini più equilibrati. La Marina Giapponese utilizzò frequentemente il velivolo anche basandolo a terra.
